In 1981 Congress authorized a change in the make-up of the penny to replace the 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc alloy used for decades.   To celebrate the U.S. bicentennial, a $2 bill, Series 1976, was introduced and showed the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back.
