The first use of George Washington's portrait on $1 notes was on Series 1869 United States Notes.   Gold coins of $1, $2.50 ("Quarter Eagle"), $3, $5 ("Half Eagle"), $10 ("Eagle"), and $20 ("Double Eagle") were used from 1795 until 1933.
